PCT SOBO DAY 54 – It’s hot!

Day 54

Start: stealthy, mile 972.1

End: Brian’s Place, Mile 1000.5

Walked miles: 28.4 miles

The sun rose this morning throwing misty roses and purple to heaven before the day was completely illuminated. I arrived a little late this morning, but I could still enjoy the cool in the morning. While walking, Mount Shasta was always present and greeted me at every step.

I really felt that I was in Pacific Crest Trail; I stayed at the top of the ridges of the mountains, which changed between wooded and rocky. I saw a couple of trucks with hunters who took advantage of the arc hunting season and even passed a camp with a deer hung on a tree. That was a show to see!

I spent some nobles in the morning, but there were still few and distant compared to Oregon. Today I had a great day of hiking to maintain the way to achieve my goal of reaching Etna in time for the post office. I was still on the verge of doing it and not doing it, but I decided that I would still try. If I couldn’t do it, it wasn’t a big thing.

As the day progressed, the temperature increased. I entered an area of exposed burns that was not only super hot, but also had a series of coatings. They only last approximately one more or less, but there were times when I couldn’t even know where the path was. The extremities, branches and trunks spread here and there, obscuring the road ahead. I did my best to follow the steps of other hikers, but there were some points when I had to take out Farout and follow the GPS.

Soon, however, I heard the sound of a chainsaw and I ran into some of mine doing paths. Awesome! He and his fellow maintainers had been working hard to clear this area and were making good progress. Of course, he had to thank him for his work.

In the next chair there was a good source of water, so, of course, it was a point of congregation for nobles and sobos equally. There must have been around 8 nobles there lunching. A sobo who had not seen before also passed, but he only got water and did not stay. I chatted with some of the nobles during lunch before continuing on my way.

PCT SOBO DAY 54 – It’s hot!

The rest of the afternoon was hot! I had to take some breaks in any piece of shadow that I could find, but finally lowered the long descent to Seiad Valley. It didn’t seem that there was much in this little town, but there was a store with food (that’s the important thing). Unfortunately, I arrived too late to eat in the coffee, but I took ice cream and cold soft drinks for a snack.

I only had a few more miles to walk from there. My goal was to get to Brian’s place. Brian is an angel of paths who welcomes hikers with a mini refrigerator full of drinks, wifi and sofas to sit. When I got there, I was even more kind than I imagined. Some hikers sat on their porch drinking soft drinks while carrying their electronic products. There was a hammock prepared for those who would like to rest, and the sofas were very comfortable. In addition, Brian was the most generous and friendly host. He went out to chat with us and even gave us a pizza he had in the fridge.

No need to stay, I spent an incredible time hanging out on his porch. There were a couple of hikers of sections that had uploaded the path in 2003, so we all wanted to hear stories about what the path was like «at the time.»

Too soon, the sun set and everyone went to find their place on the porch. Yes, Brian even left us a jeans on his porch during the night. Full of pizza and the spirit of generosity, I looked at the stars on me before I fell asleep.

And that is a day in the life of a PCT Sobo hiker!
