Poland Squad for FIFA World Cup 2026 Qualifications: Lewandowski returns as a captain after row with former coach

Robert Lewandowski returns to the Poland team as captain, manager Jan Urban said on Friday, after the striker of Barcelona had left the national team in the midst of a row about the decision of the previous coach to replace him as a skipper.

Urban was appointed in July to replace Michal Probierz, who resigned in June in the midst of the spit about his decision to remove the bracelet of the captain from the top scorer of Poland of all time and handed it to Inter Milan’s Piotr Zielinski.

Poland is third in his World Cup qualifying group Achter Finland and the Netherlands and Lewandowski is generally seen as essential for their hope to reach next year’s tournament.

«I want us to start with a training camp with a clean slate,» Urban said in a statement. «Robert Lewandowski will be the team captain, and he will appear with me at the press conference on Monday. I have appointed Piotr Zielinski as vice-captain, and Jan Bednarek will be the third captain.»

The next world cup qualification of Poland is gone against the Netherlands on 4 September before it organizes Finland three days later.

Lewandowski, 37, scored 85 goals in 158 performances for Poland.
