Portugal Squad for World Cup Qualifiers – Cristiano Ronaldo named Captain, Jota honored with extra place

Head coach Roberto Martinez of Portugal announced a squad of ’23 Plus one ‘member for the upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifications against Armenia and Hungary next month.

Martinez said that an extra place was left empty in the team for striker Diogo Jota, who died in July in a traffic accident.

«This is the first training camp without Diogo Jota. We know what he meant for each of us. We want to honor his memory every day,» said Martinez.

«We will wear his spirit in our hearts. We will win for Diogo, for his brother André, as we always do for all Portuguese people. We will call 23+1.»

Portugal, the UEFA Nations League winner, is drawn with Armenia, Hungary and the Republic of Ireland in the World Cup qualifications.

The Selecao plays Armenia on September 6 before he travels to Budapest to stand to Hungary three days later.
