Premier League leaders Arsenal ended their mini-slump on Saturday with an emphatic 4-0 win over Leeds United to move seven points clear despite Bukayo Saka being ruled out due to injury just before kick-off.
Martin Zubimendi’s header and an own goal from Leeds keeper Karl Darlow put Arsenal in the lead before half-time, while Viktor Gyokeres’ volley and a smart finish from Gabriel Jesus wrapped things up after the break.
Arsenal’s first win in four Premier League games took Mikel Arteta’s side to 53 points from 24 games with Manchester City and Aston Villa, who both play on Sunday, on 46 points.
Saka’s withdrawal did not bode well for Arsenal against in-form Leeds, who had lost just once in their last ten league games.
But his replacement Noni Madueke stepped into the breach and made a big impression. It was his cross that met Zubimendi to put Arsenal ahead after 27 minutes, and his corner that was scored into his own goal by Darlow.
The raw Elland Road crown tried to lift his side but there was no turning back after Gyokeres met Gabriel Martinelli’s cross and substitute Jesus put the icing on the cake with a superb individual effort in the 86th minute.
