Premier League 2025-26: Liverpool’s Ekitike doubtful for Arsenal match

Liverpool boss Arne Slot sounded doubtful about whether he will have striker Hugo Ekitike for Thursday’s Premier League trip to leaders Arsenal, with the Frenchman yet to return to training after a hamstring problem.

Ekitike, who has scored eight league goals this season, missed Sunday’s 2-2 draw against Fulham due to what Slot described as a minor injury. The Dutchman said time was running out for the striker to be ready with Liverpool facing a rapid turnaround.

“He has not trained with us so far,” said Slot. «Let’s see if he can train with us today. Two or three days ago, when we played against Fulham, I said he wouldn’t be out for long, but it’s difficult because the games come so quickly.»

“He’s in between, maybe he trains with the team, or it might cost him an extra day or two.”

Ekitike’s potential absence would be another blow to Slot, who is already without Alexander Isak due to a broken leg and Mohamed Salah due to his African Cup of duty.

In Ekitike’s absence, Slot can once again turn to Cody Gakpo as his most advanced attacker.

The Dutch forward has scored five Premier League goals and provided three assists this season and could lead the way as holders Liverpool attempt to derail Arsenal’s title bid.

Slot’s fourth-placed team are 14 points behind Arsenal.

Despite injury concerns, Liverpool head to north London on a nine-match unbeaten run in all competitions, although Slot lamented that not all of those games were wins.

“It is nine games unbeaten, but we have certainly had two draws too many,” said Slot. “Where are we? I think I’ve said so many times that the answer to that question is we’re not where we want to be yet, but I feel like we have a very talented squad.

“If everyone is available and ready, I think we can do special things.”
