Premier League 2025-26: Liverpool’s Slot accepts blame after worst loss during his Anfield spell

Liverpool manager Arne Slot admitted responsibility after his side suffered their heaviest Premier League home defeat ever, a 3-0 humiliation at the hands of Nottingham Forest that left the champions in 11th place and left their title chase in tatters.

Murillo, Nicolo Savona and Morgan Gibbs-White scored for Forest, who languished in the drop zone before kick-off, to hand Liverpool their sixth defeat in their last seven league games.

“Again a big disappointment,” Slot told reporters. «We started quite well in the first half hour. We conceded 1-0 and we couldn’t play like we did in the first half hour.»

The Dutchman admitted that his tactical adjustments did not provoke a response.

«If things go well or badly, it’s my responsibility. We weren’t able to create enough. I tried to adjust a few things, but it didn’t work. We couldn’t score a goal,» the Dutchman said.

Forest’s Savona scored in the opening minute after a home team collapse in the second half.

«Of course it was damaging. It was already difficult to be 1-0 against a team that blocked everything,» said Slot, who was serenaded by visiting fans who chanted: «You will be fired tomorrow morning».

Liverpool have now lost eight of their last eleven games in all competitions.

«In a few days we have to play in the Champions League again (Wednesday, when PSV Eindhoven hosts) and then play three Premier League games in a short time. Keep your head up and work very hard. We try every day,» said Slot.

The manager admitted that experience alone will not solve the problems. “It is always useful to have experienced and quality players,” he said. “It doesn’t work at the moment.”

Injuries have played a role, with Florian Wirtz and Conor Bradley the latest casualties, and summer signings such as Alexander Isak are yet to be dealt with.

Isak, the most expensive player in the competition’s history, started but was largely unnoticed, with Slot replacing him midway through the second half.
