Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero scored with a diving header and bicycle kick to secure his side a 2-2 draw at Newcastle United in an entertaining Premier League match on Tuesday, with the equalizer coming deep into stoppage time.
Spurs played with fire throughout, conceding a slew of set pieces to the home side, but ultimately it was Argentina international Romero who took advantage of a few late dead-ball situations to rescue a point for the visitor.
After a rudderless first half, in which Newcastle had plenty of possession but posed little threat, Bruno Guimaraes added a new dimension to the game after coming on at half-time. He scored in the 71st minute when Anthony Gordon and Nick Woltemade combined for a great finish for him.
Tottenham leveled seven minutes later through Romero, who stayed forward after a set piece and moved for Dan Burn to score with a brilliant header from a Mohammed Kudus cross, the first attempt on target by the goal-oriented away side.

The joy was short-lived when Rodrigo Bentancur was awarded a penalty after wrestling Dan Burn to the ground on another set piece, and a lengthy VAR review gave Gordon the chance to put the hosts ahead again, hitting home in the 86th minute.
Romero’s second equalizer of the evening came in the fifth minute of stoppage time when Spurs attacked from a corner.
With attackers and defenders jostling for position and bodies flying, Newcastle tried to clear but the ball fell for Romero and he threw himself into the air, making contact with his shin and bouncing his bicycle kick into the net.
The point leaves Tottenham in 11th place with 19 points, with Newcastle two places behind on goal difference.
«The first goal was very important. In the last three or four games the team was not good enough. It has been a difficult time, but especially in this match I like the mentality,» said Romero. Air sports.
Newcastle have made a habit of dropping points this season by gaining positions, and coach Eddie Howe was not happy to see two more that could have helped his side slip up the table.
«We weren’t at our best today but we fought to get into a position we wanted but we couldn’t defend that corner at the end. It’s a disappointing feeling that we worked so hard,» he said.
