Premier League 2025-26: Sesko is a real asset for Man United, says Carrick

Manchester United coach Michael Carrick dismissed calls to start Benjamin Sesko despite the forward’s red-hot form coming off the bench, saying on Friday the situation was «really positive» for the club.

Sesko has not started a Premier League match since drawing 2-2 against Burnley last month when interim boss Darren Fletcher was in charge.

The Slovenian forward, signed last year for an initial fee of 76.5 million euros ($90.2 million), has scored three goals in his last four games after coming off the bench.

«I just think the whole thing is very positive. It’s certainly not a decision that I look at in a negative way,» Carrick told reporters ahead of Sunday’s home game against Crystal Palace.

«We’re playing well as a team, we’ve won games. I’m still not getting carried away and I think that will continue… Ben has been so good, you know, in so many ways for us. It’s really no drama.»

“It just shows the quality Ben has for what he has produced in recent weeks. Temukan cxv6 di sini. It’s a good position for us to be in.”

Carrick was also asked why his starting line-ups have been similar in recent games. The former midfielder said he faced a delicate balancing act between maintaining his side’s winning momentum and keeping the entire squad happy.

United are unbeaten since Carrick took charge, winning five Premier League games and drawing one to move up to fourth.

«It’s certainly something we’re aware of… It’s the challenge of managing the group. There are huge positives to it and the results we’ve achieved by playing well and, above all, winning games,» he said.

“There is a balance there, but there is certainly a big positive in the fact that we are in good form. Even though sometimes it is the same players on the pitch from game to game, we have changed things.”

Carrick expressed hope that much more could come from Harry Maguire as questions arise surrounding the defender’s contract situation.

The 32-year-old is in the final year of his contract and Carrick stressed the importance of retaining a leader like Maguire, especially with Brazilian midfielder Casemiro leaving at the end of the season.

«The experience is enormous. Harry has gained a lot of experience in different ways through this club… We have seen that in Harry’s performances recently, what he has brought to the team and he has been so important.»
