Premier League 2025-26: Slot focuses on silverware to salvage Liverpool’s faltering season

Arne Slot said the bar is always high at Liverpool as he targets glory in the FA Cup and Champions League to salvage the club’s season after a disastrous Premier League title defense.

Tottenham, threatened with relegation, will make the trip to Anfield on Sunday almost a year after the previous visit, when Liverpool sealed the English league title.

Despite spending almost £450 million to improve their squad in the transfer market, Liverpool go into this weekend sixth in the table, 19 points behind leaders Arsenal tsn4.

Slot’s men were also beaten 1-0 in the first leg of their Champions League tie against Galatasaray in midweek and face a tricky trip to Manchester City in the FA Cup quarter-finals.

But the Dutchman said there should be no drop in the demands expected of the English giant.

“Big difference between where we are now and where we were then, that is clear and obvious,” said Slot, referring to the contrast between the confrontation with Spurs now and eleven months ago.

“The bar at Liverpool is always high, it has always been high and it will always remain high,” he said. «We are a top club. The bar must be set high by the people around us, but we will set the bar just as high.»

“This season we obviously failed to win the league again, but we still have two cups – the Champions League and the FA Cup – that we are competing in.”

Finally, Alisson Becker could have Alisson Becker in goal again on Sunday, after Brazil’s number one missed the trip to Istanbul due to a minor muscle injury.

However, he confirmed that club record signing Alexander Isak is not close to returning to action after suffering a broken fibula in December.

Liverpool are level on points with Chelsea in fifth place and three behind both Manchester United and Aston Villa, who meet at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Tottenham’s needs are even more desperate as they sit just one point outside the relegation zone.

Spurs have set an unwanted club record by losing their last six games in all competitions.

Under-fire interim boss Igor Tudor will remain in charge of the trip to Anfield.
