Premier League leaders Arsenal’s long winning streak came to an end in a breathless 2-2 draw against Sunderland, with Brian Brobbey securing a deserved point for the hosts with an injury-time equalizer on Saturday.
It looked like Leandro Trossard’s thunderbolt in the 74th minute had secured an 11th straight win in all competitions for Arsenal, who trailed at half-time.
Sunderland defender Dan Ballard put the high-flying hosts ahead in the 36th minute, the first time in nine games that Arsenal’s defense had been breached.
But Mikel Arteta’s side found a new level in the second half and took the lead when captain Bukayo Saka fired home an equalizer in the 54th minute before Trossard intervened to smash an unstoppable shot past Robin Roefs.
Sunderland weren’t done yet though and Brobbey showed great athleticism to volley past David Raya from close range.

Arsenal now have 26 points as they extended their lead to seven points over second-placed Manchester City, who could close the gap on champions Liverpool at home on Sunday.
Promoted Sunderland is third with 19 points after a dream start to the season for the Regis Le Bris team.
While Arsenal will look at the way they controlled the second half, it was hard to deny that Sunderland deserved to become the first team to take Premier League points from Arteta’s team since Manchester City in September.
It was matched by Sunderland in the first half, and Ballard showed great strength to deny Declan Rice before driving a shot past Raya to send the home fans wild.
However, Arsenal dominated after the break and shortly after Saka dragged a shot wide it was played in by Mikel Merino to score after Rice had turned possession over.
Trossard’s goal was worth winning any game, but it wouldn’t be for Arsenal this time as hopes of a nine-point lead were dashed by Brobbey’s late performance.
