Premier League 2025-26: Why was Mateta’s penalty retaken in the Crystal Palace – Manchester United match?

Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta had to retake his penalty against Manchester United at Selhurst Park on Sunday.

Mateta won the Eagles a penalty midway through the first half after being fouled in the penalty area by United defender Leny Yoro. He sent his first attempt past United goalkeeper Senne Lammens, but saw his celebration cut short by a VAR check.

Referee Rob Jones then announced that the initial penalty had been disallowed due to an accidental double touch, with replays confirming that Mateta kicked his penalty on his standing foot on the way to goal.

Mateta then retook the penalty and beat Lammens again, giving Palace the lead. The goal is Mateta’s seventh in the Premier League this season.
