Premier League – Haaland Nets twice as Man City Burnley thrashes Burnley


Two own goals from Maxime Esteve ended Burnley’s hope to fight back when Manchester City drove to a 5-1 Premier League victory on Saturday, with Erling Haaland a late brace.

The third victory of City in the campaign took it to 10 points of six games, reducing the gap with champion Liverpool to five points, after the leader lost 2-1 in Crystal Palace.

City took an early lead when Burnley Keeper Martin Dubravka took the shot from Jeremy Doku, but it returned to Phil Foden, and Esteve’s hurried attempt to erase the danger went in the net instead.

City dominated the possession and subject the Burnley attack, where the visitor was unable to make an attempt to score until the 23rd minute, when Kyle Walker tried his luck with a long shot.

Dubravka brought Nico Gonzalez’s shot in front of a corner and hit Foden’s free kick to keep Burnley in the game, while a dominant city seemed to double the lead.

But Burnley’s very first shot on the goal found the equalizer in the 38th minute, when Jaidon Anthony played a one-two with Quilindschy Hartman and shot with his left foot in the box. The ball got a deflection from Ruben Dias and jumped into the net.

Haaland Shines in Second Half

Anthony’s fourth goal of the season New Life Burnley and the visitor insisted on a second goal after the break, with Hartman’s Shot testing by city holder Gianluigi Donnarumma.

But City regained the lead in the 61st minute when Haaland, who had a quiet first half, jumped up to go a cross for Matheus Nunes to finish up close.

Esteve’s second own goal came four minutes later, when the shot of the replacement Oscar Bobb hit the French defender before he went close to the distant pole, giving City a comfortable 3-1 lead.

Dubravka kept shots outside of Tijjani Reijnders and Doku while the city stacked on the pressure, but he could not deny Haaland when the Norwegian attacker found the net of Doku’s pass.

Haaland scored again in extra time as a mixture between defenders Esteve and Hjalmar Ekdal, the most important scorer of the competition allowed to break through to Doel and Slot in his eighth goal in the campaign, so that a 5-1 victory for City was sealed.

Burnley’s third loss in the last four games left it on the 17th in the table, with only four points.

City, who will visit a monaco for a Champions League collision on Wednesday, will continue its English top campaign in Brentford on 5 October, Aston Villa will visit the same day.
