Premier League: Man City holds firm again as Brighton fights back for draw; Semenyo signs off in style at Bournemouth

Manchester City were forced to hold on to a disappointing 1-1 Premier League draw at home to Brighton & Hove Albion on Wednesday when Erling Haaland’s penalty was canceled out by a second-half strike from the visitor’s Kaoru Mitoma.

City, who have now drawn their last three league games, are second in the table with 43 points, five behind leaders Arsenal, who play Liverpool at home on Thursday.

Haaland scored his 150th goal for City from the penalty spot four minutes before half-time after Jeremy Doku was fouled by Diego Gomez and a VAR review confirmed the decision.

The Norwegian looked relieved as he ended his three-goal drought and took his tally to 20 Premier League goals for the season.

City came close to doubling their lead just after half-time when Bernardo Silva pounced on a Brighton error, but his effort hit the post.

City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma and Brighton player Maxim De Cuyper became involved in a heated confrontation, which ended with yellow cards for both players.

Brighton hit back on the hour mark, as Mitoma met a pass from the flank and positioned himself on the edge of the penalty area before guiding a low shot into the far corner.

The visitor took control after the equalizer, slowing the pace as it built up its attacks and came agonizingly close to taking the lead.

Mitoma found Gomez in the penalty area, but Gomez couldn’t get his finish right and hit the goalkeeper. The rebound fell to Mitoma, whose angled shot from close to the byline rattled the post.

In the final minutes Haaland found himself alone in the penalty area with only the goalkeeper to beat, but Bart Verbruggen produced a fine save to deny him.

Antoine Semenyo celebrated his 26th birthday in unforgettable fashion when he scored Bournemouth’s winning goal in a 3-2 win over Tottenham Hotspur in what was almost certainly his last game for the club before likely moving to Manchester City.

The Ghanaian forward curled a right-footed shot past Tottenham keeper Guglielmo Vicario in stoppage time, sparking wild celebrations before he was replaced to a standing ovation.

It was his 30th goal in 101 Premier League games for Bournemouth and perfectly illustrated why City are willing to part with 65 million pounds ($87.46 million) for his services.

“That was the kind of thing you write in films and no one deserves it more than him,” said Marcus Tavernier from Bournemouth.

Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola admitted Semenyo will leave and paid glowing tribute to the player whose career has taken off in spectacular fashion following loan spells at Newport County and Sunderland while playing for Bristol City.

«To play as he did, the dedication to help in any way possible until the last second. I think the football has been fair and given him a nice moment,» Iraola said.

«I think it was, unfortunately for us I think it was (his last game). He’s been, if not the best, one of the best I’ve coached. He’s improved every season.»

«He has scored ten goals in half a season and not even a number nine. It’s not just the numbers, but many things: the physicality, the balls in the air and the defensive things. He will be a big miss.»

Bournemouth ended a run of eleven Premier League games without a win in a thrilling match.

The team fell behind early on through a Mathys Tel attempt, but turned the situation around at halftime when Evanilson and Junior Kroupi both scored for the hosts.

Tottenham had a penalty canceled out after Micky van de Ven’s storming run ended and he went down in the area, but the visitor leveled in spectacular fashion when Joao Palhinha sent an overhead kick past Djordje Petrovic.

However, Semenyo had the last laugh by securing a double for Bournemouth over Tottenham and putting more pressure on Tottenham manager Thomas Frank, whose side are in 14th place.
