Premier League: Man United ‘too comfortable’ in dramatic draw at Spurs, says Amorim

Ruben Amorim accused his Manchester United players of getting «too comfortable» before Tottenham Hotspur canceled out his team’s early lead. He described Saturday’s 2-2 draw as losing two points, even though it provided a last-gasp equalizer.

Bryan Mbeumo put United ahead with a first-half header and appeared to be on his way to a fourth win in five games and provisional second place in the Premier League.

However, Spurs equalized with six minutes to go and Richarlison struck early in extra time, with Matthijs de Ligt grabbing a point in the 96th minute.

Amorim was in no mood to celebrate a dramatic end to a match and said his team should have taken it easier, especially after giving away the lead in last Saturday’s 2-2 draw at Nottingham Forest.

“We have a lot of problems,” he told reporters. «We’re just getting started. I know sometimes the results show people that we’re improving… but we still have a lot to do.»

“Overcoming everything and managing to score is a good thing,” Amorim said. “But if you look at the rest of the game, we were comfortable and I think we have to do better, be more aggressive, feel the atmosphere in the stadium, that the three points were there, the space was there.

«We have to expect that anything can happen in one match and the atmosphere in the stadium can change. And today that was the case.»

Striker Benjamin Sesko, signed this summer for an initial €76.5 million, started on the bench after attracting criticism with just two goals in his previous 11 appearances.

The Slovenian was denied the chance to restore United’s lead to 1-1 by a brilliant last-ditch challenge from Micky van de Ven, which appeared to cause Sesko discomfort.

Amorim insisted he was not concerned about Sesko’s form but was concerned the forward could face a spell on the sidelines.

“I’m more worried about an injury because it’s in the knee and I don’t know, and we need Ben to be a better team,” he said.
