Premier League: Manchester United fires manager Ruben Amorim

Ruben Amorim has been dismissed as head coach of Manchester United fourteen months after arriving at Old Trafford, the club announced on Monday.

United said in a statement that the Portuguese had left his role as the club’s leadership had «reluctantly made the decision that now is the right time to make change».

The club added: “This gives the team the best chance of the highest possible Premier League finish.”

United are currently sixth in the table after a 1-1 draw at Leeds on Sunday.

Darren Fletcher will take charge of the team against Burnley on Wednesday.

After that match at Elland Road, an irate Amorim insisted that he was United’s manager and not just the coach during a striking press conference in which he told the scouting department and sporting director to “do their job”.

The 40-year-old had hinted at frustration behind the scenes in the build-up to the match, as the United boss refused to clarify his recent comments about the club’s transfer plans.

Amorim was appointed in November 2024 and led the side to the Europa League final in Bilbao in May, losing to Tottenham Hotspur, but the club finished 15th in the Premier League last season.
