PSG beats Tottenham on punishments to win very first UEFA Super Cup

Champions League winner Paris Saint-Germain defeated Europa League champion Tottenham Hotspur 4-3 on penalties to win its very first UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday after producing a late comeback to draw the match 2-2.

In his first competitive match among the new coach Thomas Frank, Tottenham seemed to be in the hands of the trophy, because it led 2-0 in the Stadio Friuli in Udine, Italy after the break.

Micky van de Ven gave the Europa League winner last season the lead in the 39th minute, and Cristian Romero scored the second goal three minutes in the second half.

PSG, however, was saved by two substitutes when Lee Kang-in withdrew a goal in the 85th minute and Goncalo Ramos went to the equalizer for four minutes.

That meant a penalty shoot-out, but it started bad for PSG when Vitinha brought his first staircase wide.

The new goalkeeper of Paris, Lucas Chevalier,, however, saved from Van de Ven, and Mathys Tel missed the target, so that Nuno Mendes could convert the winning penalty for PSG.

Dominic Solanke, Rodrigo Bentancur and Pedro Porro all scored in vain from the place for Spurs. Ramos, Ousmane Dembele and Lee converted for PSG before Mendes performed.

It is the first time that PSG, or every French club, has lifted the Super Cup, because it takes his count of trophies in 2025 to five.

It is also the perfect start of the new campaign for the Luis Enrique team, which had a short break out of season, after he lost the FIFA Club World Cup final to Chelsea exactly a month ago.

It now starts with the new Ligue 1 campaign on Sunday to Nantes, while Tottenham will focus his attention on the start of the Premier League season, because it takes on Burnley at home on Saturday.
