After winning a first world title in the FIFA Intercontinental Cup, Paris Saint-Germain head coach Luis Enrique said his side is setting the standard for others, calling the Ligue 1 champions the ‘benchmark team’.
PSG triumphed over Flamengo 2-1 on penalties in the final at the Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium in Al-Rayyan, Qatar, on Wednesday, lifting its sixth title of the 2025 calendar year.
«Well, I think for a team like ours, with very clear objectives, you are always the reference team. The team that everyone wants to beat, I don’t think I can repeat the year that PSG has had, it is unforgettable. On that basis, our idea is to have a very positive combination of well-experienced players and younger players, to continue to bring joy to our fans and try to win trophies,» Enrique said after the match.
In this year, the Parisian team won the Trophée des Champions, the French League, the French Cup, the UEFA Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup before the Intercontinental Cup. This approach, Enrique said, will also be followed after the holidays.
MATCH REPORT – PSG vs FLAMENGO
«It’s great to have this title. And once again we have shown the quality that we have shown all year long. There is one French Cup match before Christmas. And then our goal will be the same as last year: to keep winning and playing good football.»
The Spanish coach also praised Filipe Luis’ Flamengo and congratulated him on a season in which the Brazilian team won four trophies (Serie A, Campeonato Carioca, Copa Libertadores and Supercopa do Brasil).
«The first half of the match was incredible. We kept pressing and were able to control the numbers. In the second half it was more balanced and then it became very difficult. I have to congratulate Flamengo not only on today’s match, but also on their season. They won almost everything and played very good football.»
Enrique concluded the post-match press conference by reiterating that winning six titles in a calendar year was not enough, while also remembering the title that slipped away (the club lost to Chelsea in the Club World Cup final). «Six titles. Not bad. We have to keep winning and keep making history.»
