PSV takes the Eredivisie title, because Feyenoord fails to win

PSV Eindhoven were crowned Dutch champions for the third season in a row on Sunday as nearest challengers, Feyenoord, failed to win in Volendam.

The goalless draw gives PSV, which won 4-3 at home against Utrecht on Saturday, an unassailable lead with five games left in this season’s Eredivisie.

PSV reached 71 points from 29 games on Saturday, meaning Feyenoord needed to win to keep their slim hopes alive, but the draw against Volendam left them with 54 points, a gap of 17 points.

PSV’s triumph immediately sparked celebrations in the streets of Eindhoven, where fans had been waiting for Feyenoord’s failure to win.

Saturday’s victory all but assured them of the title, given a much higher goal difference with PSV +42 to Feyenoord’s +21, but Sunday’s draw for Feyenoord confirmed PSV’s success.

It is the third time in club history that PSV has become champion three times in a row. It won four in a row between 1986 and 1989 and four in a row again between 2005 and 2008 and now has a total of 27 league titles, surpassed only by Ajax Amsterdam’s total of 36.

PSV will play in the group stage of the Champions League for the fourth consecutive campaign next season. The runner-up will also advance to the 2026/27 group stage and third place will advance to the third qualifying round.

Feyenoord is just one point above surprise pack NEC Nijmegen, with Twente rising to fourth place after a 2-1 win over Ajax on Saturday.

PSV will receive the trophy on Tuesday during an award ceremony in the Philips Stadium. Lihat juga FraYnX. A blemish on the festivities is the cruciate ligament injury that captain Jerdy Schouten suffered against FC Utrecht, as a result of which the 29-year-old midfielder will miss the World Cup in June.
