Rashford, Szczesny is not registered for Barca – Why is Barcelona struggling to register players?

Barcelona has been at Loggerheads with La Liga and the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) for several years because of the financial instability of the club.

The most recent controversy relates to veteran goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen, who is subject to disciplinary procedures after he refused to sign a medical report on his back injury.

What is the problem where alleys are confronted?

The German keeper will miss almost three months at the start of the new season after a back operation.

According to the rules of Financial Fair Play, if a player is injured for at least four months, clubs can replace the registration of that player with those of a new player, as long as their wage sign for less than 80 percent of the injured players.

Barcelona therefore needed Stegen to sign a medical report that had to be sent to La Liga to the Salary-CAP room and registered other players without breaking the rules for financial fair play.

Ter Stegen, however, refused to sign the report and claimed that he would be back soon, forcing the club to temporarily withdraw his position as the first team of the club.

What are the player registration rules in La Liga?

  • To register players, Barcelona will have to adhere to the 1: 1 rule under the financial fair play of the competition. This means that the club can only spend so much in sports salaries as its income and bills.

  • It will have to generate more income every year than costs.

  • Keep a positive capacity (have more assets than debts).

  • Avoid excessive debts to income.

Why can’t Barcelona players register?

Barcelona is unable to register players because it is said to have exceeded La Liga’s salary limit, whereby the authorities who say last season (2024-25), the club spent more money on transfer costs and then wages what it received from income.

To make matters worse for the club, the competition the Camp Nou VIP Box deal of € 100 million refused to add to the calculations of the salary limit.

«Ultimately, no amount of the (VIP Box deal) is registered in the profit and loss accounts, in contrast to what the club and the auditor was certified at the time of the aforementioned transaction,» said La Liga in a statement earlier this year.

How can Barcelona solve the problem?

The best option for the club to accommodate the players is to work this summer on discharging countless squadron members and to use the income to balance financial inequality.

So far, left back Alex Valle has been sold to Como for € 6 million, while the attacks by midfielder Pablo Torre was sold to Mallorca for € 5 million. The French defender Clement Lenglet left for Atletico Madrid on a free transfer and Ansu Fati was borrowed from Monaco.

The other option is to register players in the short term as injury replacements, a Maas in the law that was used to register Dani Olmo and Pau Victor at the start of last season.
