Real Madrid has parted ways with Spanish coach Xabi Alonso by mutual agreement, the club announced on Monday. Los Blanos have appointed Castilla (B team) coach Alvaro Arbeloa as their new first-team coach.
The decision comes after Los Blancos’ 2-3 defeat to arch-rivals Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup final on Sunday.
Real are four points behind the Catalan club at the top of La Liga.

Alonso officially took charge of Real on June 1, 2025 after a successful spell at Bayer Leverkusen, where he won the domestic double in 2023/24 and led the team to the Europa League final.
After overseeing Madrid’s run to the semi-finals of the Club World Cup, he started in impressive fashion, winning 13 of his next 14 matches, with the only blemish being a crushing derby defeat to Atletico Madrid.
However, after a defeat on 4 November against Liverpool in the Champions League, the team’s form dipped, winning just twice in eight games. Although manager Alonso’s five-match winning streak provided temporary relief, it was not enough to convince club officials to keep him long-term.
