Real Madrid vs Barcelona — What happened in the previous El Clasico in La Liga?

Real Madrid will look to claim bragging rights in the first El Clasico of the season when they host Barcelona in a La Liga match at Madrid’s Santiago Bernabeu Stadium on Sunday.

The last time Barcelona and Real Madrid clashed, it was the former who fought back to claim a fourth Clásico victory from four meetings last season, with the score at 4-3 at full-time.

Kylian Mbappe earned a penalty when he was brought down by Barcelona goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny, although the Catalans complained in vain that the French striker was offside in the build-up. The striker beat Szczesny, who dived in the right direction and got his fingers in, but couldn’t keep him out.

In the 14th minute, Mbappe doubled Madrid’s lead with a deadly finish after Vinicius Junior played him through.

Just as it has done so many times this season, Hansi Flick’s feisty young Barcelona fought their way back to the front with an electrifying comeback.

Eric Garcia headed in Ferran Torres’ flick-on before 17-year-old Lamine Yamal leveled with a cultivated bending effort past Courtois.

Two minutes later, Raphinha gave Barca the lead, sending in Yamal’s superb cross with the outside of his boot.

Mbappé thought he had won another penalty when he fell under pressure from Frenkie de Jong, but VAR revealed offside in the build-up.

Moments later, Raphinha scored his second goal, picking up Lucas Vazquez’s pocket on the edge of the penalty area, exchanging passes with Torres and beating Courtois.

Flick brought on Alejandro Balde and Andreas Christensen after the break, with the latter playing a dangerous ball as Vinicius looked for Mbappé. The Brazilian found his man next time, with Mbappe scoring his hat-trick as he and Vinicius broke behind Barca’s high line.
