Rise, Val and Flux: the administrative timeline of Indian Football


The Indian football enjoyed the golden age from 1951 to 1962, and those who witnessed those times often loving the past days. Apart from nostalgia, football in the country did not follow the most professional approach, with the most clubs that play in state competitions or select national tournaments.

Here is a short look at the journey of Indian Football from Glorie to Stagnation

1996
First steps

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) decided to revise the domestic structure by launching the first National League of the country, a semi-professional tournament called the National Football League (NFL). It started with 12 teams spread over two zones (west and east), played with matches at neutral locations.

2006
Make the game popular

One of the most important challenges that the AIFF was confronted was to ensure that football reached a wider audience. In September 2006 it signed a 10-year television and media contract with Zee Sports to broadcast the coming new I-League, together with other AIFF-organized tournaments and select international competitions of the Indian National Team.

2007
Pro

After 11 seasons of the NFL, the AIFF moved to further professionalize the sport by launching the i-League in 2007. It has adopted a more traditional format, where teams played at home and road races.

2010
Expansion of the partnership

Despite the 10-year contract, the AIFF ended the deal in 2010, only four years, due to differences between the two parties with regard to payment and marketing.

2011
Start of the Reliance era

After Sea sportThe AIFF brought Reliance Industries on board. It signed a new 15-year-old, £ 700 crore deal with reliance and the International Management Group (IMG).

2013
Birth of the ISL

Around the same time, franchise -based competitions gained popularity in India, especially after the success of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The Aiff, with the support of Reliance, launched the Indian Super League (ISL) on October 21, 2013.

2014
First years

Despite the fresh approach to the ISL for Indian football, it was initially missing official recognition of the Asian football confederation (AFC) and FIFA. The I-League remained the official competition of India, which means that ISL teams were not eligible to qualify for the AFC Champions League and AFC Cup.

2016
Pitch Queens

The Indian Women’s League (IWL) was launched with six teams to offer a National League for women’s football. Earlier, the top match was the Senior Ladies National Championship, the Dame Sequivalent of the Santosh trophy. IWL winners are eligible for the AFC Women’s Champions League.

2017
Home phase

India made his debut in The Men’s Edition of FIFA U-17 World Cup as a host, but ended the bottom of the group and did not manage to reach the knockouts.

Change in the setup

After discussions between the AIFF and the AFC about the future roadmap of Indian football, the ISL received the status of the Premier League competition in the country. This change enabled the ISL champion to represent India in the AFC Champions League play-offs, while the I-League winner earned a place in the AFC Cup play-offs.

2022
A new addition

After further AFC recommendations, the AIFF announced that from the 2022-23 season the I-League champion would receive automatic promotion to the ISL without having to pay a participation costs. However, the promoted team should meet the national club permit criteria set by the AIFF. After winning the I-League title of 2022–23, Punjab FC became the first team to receive automatic promotion to the ISL. In the meantime, India organized the 2022 edition of FIFA U-17 World Cup ladies, but again did not succeed in the group phase. The tournament was originally planned for 2020, but was postponed because of the COVID-19 Pandemie.

2023
I national misery

India made his third AFC Asian Cup performance since 1996, but again did not succeed in the group stage, such as in 2011 and 2019. In the Asian Games, the best results of the team remained a round of 16 finish in 1951 and 1962 in 2010 and 2022.
