Liverpool defender Andy Robertson called Dominik Szoboszlai’s mistake in the FA Cup win over Barnsley ‘unacceptable’ and admitted his side still have room for improvement despite their recent unbeaten run.
Szoboszlai was guilty of a careless blunder when his misplaced backheel in his own penalty area allowed Barnsley’s Adam Phillips to score in Monday’s third round match at Anfield.
Liverpool led by two goals at the time and went on to record a 4-1 win against their third-tier opponent. Szoboszlai had scored a superb long-range opener earlier in the match but Liverpool boss Arne Slot said he would speak to the Hungarian about what he called a ‘weird’ decision.
Robertson was also frustrated by unnecessarily casual errors, which also led to Barnsley manager Conor Hourihane accusing Szoboszlai of disrespect.
“The frustrating thing is Dom does this incredible 60-metre sprint to start with, he takes the hit from The Kop and I don’t know if that might have gone to his head,” Robertson said.
«We can joke about it now, but it’s unacceptable to lose a goal like that. Dom obviously knows that. He’s been great for us this season and he was really good again. He just had a loss of concentration and we can’t afford too many of them in the six-yard box.»
Liverpool have extended their unbeaten run to 11 games to ease the crisis that engulfed the Premier League champions earlier this season.
But Scottish left-back Robertson said the game against Barnsley provided further evidence that Liverpool still have a dangerous habit of putting teams back into games.
«Being undefeated for 11 years is good, but some performances need to be better. Everyone knows that,» Robertson said.
«We have looked a bit safer defensively, which is nice, but now we have to sort everything out because people say we don’t have an attacking threat. If you want to win trophies and progress in tournaments, you have to find the perfect balance. That’s what we are working towards.»
