Tottenham captain Cristian Romero branded his side’s lack of depth ‘disgraceful’ after the quiet end to the transfer window on Monday.
Romero was forced off due to illness during Tottenham’s 2–2 draw with Manchester City, pushing the club’s list of absentees for fitness reasons into double figures.
Tottenham boss Thomas Frank has had a difficult first season, partly due to the number of key personnel sidelined for long periods.
The North Londoners have won just two of their last fifteen Premier League games and sit in a disappointing fourteenth place.
Although Tottenham signed England midfielder Conor Gallagher from Atletico Madrid in mid-January, it sold last season’s top scorer, Brennan Johnson, to Crystal Palace.
Shortly after the winter transfer deadline passed, Argentine defender Romero took to social media to express his frustration at the lack of recruits.
“Great effort from all my teammates yesterday, they were incredible,” he continued Instagram.
“I wanted to be available to help them even though I wasn’t feeling well, especially because we only had eleven players available – unbelievable but true and shameful.
«We will continue to show up and take responsibility to turn this tide, work hard and stick together. All that remains is to thank you all for being there and for always supporting us, the fans.»
Romero’s explosion on social media was appreciated by several Tottenham teammates, including Pedro Porro, Xavi Simons and Dominic Solanke.
Tottenham made unsuccessful approaches for Ghanaian striker Antoine Semenyo, who joined Manchester City from Bournemouth, and Liverpool defender Andy Robertson.
It did announce the signing of Hearts teenager James Wilson on Monday with the option to make the move permanent, but the forward will initially only play for the Under-21s.
