Running without time – the walk

Day 111-8 Miles today from the surplus stealth site to South Arm Road, 2500 feet up, 3100 feet below, 1952 in Mile Marker

Shorter days

I arrived to the road this morning around 6:00 am, which was a good early start. I felt bad because I started so late yesterday and only made 12 miles. If I had started before, it is most likely that this section of 34 miles could have broken in two days.

The days are definitely shortened. This morning at 6:00 am it was not yet completely illuminated in daylight. This seems similar to my 5:00 am starting only a few weeks ago.

It is difficult to believe that it has gone through almost four seasons now. I started at the end of winter in mid -March. I traveled to spring. And now I am in the summer.

Now it is the summer solstice and the days will begin to shorten towards the winter again. The stations, like the stations of life, develop here on the path of the Apalaches.

Don’t bother me

The comments about Farout indicated that there was a nest of hornets near the start of my walk today. So I took off this morning with a sprint with the hope of not being bitten early in the morning.

It is also cold this morning, which keeps insects a little more tamers. I think I have passed the area where the Hornets are.

Ruff Raff

The surplus pond was a very cold place in the middle of the forest. I am sure there is a path that reaches the pond, but I did not see it. Another section has appeared Ker, set his store and went to sleep.

I know that I missed a ruff trail magic 24 hours before arriving there. They were prepared for the weekend in Surplus Pond. It would have been nice to hang out with them again. The last time was in the week of Daze Prer-Trail Daze of Mile 420.

Squirrel barking

It is an interesting forest. I don’t listen to many birds, but I do listen to these little red squirrels. They are quite fun. They will squeak if you approach them. Almost as if they were barking.

The walk to the top of the Wyman mountain was without incident. The last small section was an steep climb, but had many feet and grips.

However, I couldn’t have done that last night because I was exhausted yesterday. I think the hard impulse through Mahosuc in the previous two days really erased me for yesterday’s walk. I feel good so far this morning.

Pretty plants

The morning sun that rises in the East launched very beautiful views in the mountains on the east side of Mount Wyman. I could see a lake in the distance with its own cloud around the surface.

I keep watching these really beautiful red berries plants with four leaves. Many times they are next to these other plants that have slightly higher stems with small blue berries. It is a very good colored contrast.

Mood’s mood

The path made its way down the hill to Sawyer Brook before crossing the stream and then climbing Moody Mountain. Moody Mountain was a rise from 1200 Foott to more than 0.8 miles.

Moody Mountain’s climb was very steep and difficult. I received the reception of the cell phone near the top and noticed some Knockerz text messages. There is a family emergency that threatens to get the way.

Emergency

When I looked where Knockerz had moved from Bethel, I realized that I was 20 minutes by car from South Arm Road. A road on the way near where he stayed in Andover. I was 2.4 miles away from South Arm Road, so I told him to meet with me there.

Knockerz will probably return home. I will miss her and her support at road crosses. Now I will have to take my food to the next refueling that will add weight to my package. In addition, I will have to take any additional equipment that you may need.

Intelligent to stop

On the climb to Moody Mountain there was a point of view where I could see Sawyer Notch. The path went down from that mountain under the faces of the rock, I think. I thought about night walks last night to extend my miles, but it seemed that there were some steep descents, so I decided to leave it to Surplus Pond last night. I think it was a good movement looking back in the difficult field that I have already covered today.

Rare trees

The path on Moody Mountain traveled along the edge of the cliff with some fantastic views. Then he entered a really older growth forest. The trees are not as massive as trees in the south, but these trees are obviously old.

They are also really interesting trees. Some with smooth paper bark others with curling cortex. I really don’t know the names of these trees.

Out of the path

I met Knockerz at the crossroads of the road and then we went down to the city of Andover. Knockerz was staying in the cabin hostel a place that has been in business for a long time.

She showed me the table where everyone had signed below, including «The Crazy One Earl Schaefer.» I added my name to a small corner near Earls. People say that the table can make it the Museum of the Sender of the Apalaches someday. A strange ending for a day that I thought would go very differently.
