Schalke German Cup match stopped after alleged racial abuse

A first-round German cup match between Schalke and hosts Lokomotiv Leipzig was suspended on Sunday after a visit to winger Christopher Antwi-Adjei claimed racial abuse of home fans.

The match, which ended 1-0 to Schalke, was suspended for almost five minutes after Antwi-Adjei had informed the referee that he was racially abused by spectators.

An announcement at the PA stadium was judged racist abuse. After the game was resumed, the winger was repeatedly booed by the home fans.

After the game, Antwi-Adjei said: “I don’t want to mention the words that were spoken. I am not the type of person who goes home and cries, but I find it disappointing that you still hear this on the field these days.

“I signaled to the linesman that something had happened. It is the least that I could do.

«I am a normal person. This is not appropriate.»

Antwi-Adjei was born in Germany, but has represented Ghana three times at an international level.

A spokesperson for the Lokomotiv Leipzig press said that the insults could not be verified.

«We have a staff member who was exactly where the player stood. He heard nothing. De Lijnman probably didn’t hear anything,» the press spokesperson told Sky Germany.

Lokomotiv Leipzig has previously come under fire for supporter groups with right -wing ideological links.

In 2018, the club fired two youth coaches for taking a photo of a group of young players who performed a Nazi greeting.
