Serie A: Inter were held to a 1-1 draw with Atalanta as the battle for the league title remains open

Inter Milan were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Atalanta on Saturday as the Serie A leaders continue to drop points and miss out on the title race.

Inter has 68 points, eight ahead of second-placed AC Milan, which visits Lazio on Sunday. Atalanta remains seventh on 47 points.

Francesco Pio Esposito put Inter ahead in the 26th minute but failed to take the match past Atalanta in a lackluster match.

The visitor found the equalizer through Nikola Krstovic eight minutes from time, after which Inter manager Cristian Chivu was sent off as the home team furiously protested a foul in the build-up.

Both sides tried to put the recent disappointments behind them. Inter’s 15-match unbeaten run in Serie A was defeated 1-0 in the derby by neighbors AC Milan last weekend.

Atalanta, meanwhile, was on a run of four games without a win in all competitions, including Tuesday’s 6-1 win at home to Bayern Munich in the first leg of the last 16 of the Champions League.

Inter had plenty of early possession, but the final ball let them down, with Atalanta looking dangerous on the counter.

Yann Sommer saved an early shot from Gianluca Scamacca, the Inter goalkeeper could not hold the ball but tried to clear as Giorgio Scalvini was ready to strike tsn4.

Italy coach Gennaro Gattuso was at San Siro as he prepared to select his squad for the World Cup play-off with Northern Ireland on March 26, and Esposito will have impressed him as he opened the scoring.

Esposito collected a cross from Nicolo Barella and drove a low shot from wide into the area under goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi, who probably should have done better.

Marcus Thuram curled an effort just wide shortly after the break, with Inter looking to end the match, and the striker was one-on-one with the goalkeeper on the hour mark, but Carnesecchi quickly stepped out to block the shot.

Atalanta punished Inter’s misses when Sommer saved Kamaldeen Sulemana’s shot, but fellow substitute Krstovic jumped in to score the rebound as Chivu’s side risked allowing Milan back into Scudetto contention.
