Serie A: Juventus held up to 1-1 draw by Atalanta to miss in the first place

Juventus missed the opportunity to move the top of the Serie A classification when Saturday it was held to a 1-1 draw by Atalanta, from behind to make it right, but unable to find a late winner when the visitor was up to 10 men.

A second consecutive draw for the host, after opening the season with three wins, gives defending champion Napoli the chance to continue, because Juventus had not reported Atalanta at home for the eighth consecutive league match.

Juventus remains second in the rankings on 11 points, a behind Napoli that is gone to AC Milan on Sunday, while Atalanta is fifth at nine points.

«Glass half full, because we have done a great achievement,» said Juventus manager Igor Tudor Dazn.

«One of the best since I am here. It was a serious match between two teams participating in the Champions League, so that’s okay.»

The host went on the attack from the off, with the early header of Pierre Kalulu who came upright and minutes later Teun Koopmeiners stormed into the area before hit his shot in the side net.

Atalanta Keeper Marco Carnesecchi was good to parry the efforts of Vasilije Adzic and the shot of Khephren Thuram from outside the area took a bit of the keeper almost defeated, but the ball just went wide from the post.

The first half was in Extra Time when Juventus owned in his own half and Kamaldeen turned Sulemana and turned his way to the area before he drilled his shot through Adzic’s legs and in the far bottom corner.

Atalanta continued where they had gone after the interval and should have double the lead, but Nikola Krstovic rose his effort wide when one on one with the keeper.

Super replacements

The introduction of Dusan Vlahovic of the Juve Bank came before the hour marking – the Serbian striker scored four goals this season in all competitions – but it was two other replacements that combined for the 78th minute equalizer.

The ball of Joao Mario in the box was hit incorrectly by defender Odilon Kossounou and Juan Cabal fought to poke home from close range, making it reached his first Serie A-target, after having spent the majority of last season with a front cruciate ligament injury.

«I came back after a long time and I am happy that I scored my first goal in the Serie A,» Cabal said Dazn.

«We wanted to bring the three points home, but better than zero.»

Two minutes later, Atalanta captain Marten de Roon picked up a second booking, but despite the besieging of the visitors, Juventus van Tudor was forced to settle for a draw against his Croatian counterpart and former Hajduk -split teammate Ivan Juric.
