Substitute Benjamin Sesko scored a 96th-minute equalizer as Manchester United rescued a point from relegation-threatened West Ham United in their 1-1 Premier League draw at the London Stadium on Tuesday.
United remained fourth in the table with 45 points from 26 games, while West Ham moved to 24 points from the same number of games, two points clear of the safety zone.
Tomas Soucek put West Ham ahead five minutes into the second half and looked set to claim a precious victory until Sesko’s smart finish deep into extra time broke the home side’s hearts.
United’s run of four consecutive wins came to an end when interim manager Michael Carrick dropped his first points on what was a frustrating evening for his chasing side in the Champions League, before Sesko’s late cameo.
West Ham’s point has several clubs looking nervously over their shoulders, not least 17th-placed Nottingham Forest (26 points) and Tottenham Hotspur (29), who will have joined the United fans in celebrating Sesko’s equalizer.
The visiting side had just three shots on target in the entire match as West Ham did well to keep their chances limited, but as they dominated possession in the final 15 minutes there was a sense of inevitability about the goal hgtgdfgdtr21.
As a warning sign, United substitute Joshua Zirkzee had fired a header inches wide of the post just before the equalizer.
United came close to the opener midway through the first half when Luke Shaw sent a shot home, but Aaron Wan-Bissaka was able to clear the ball off the line against his former side.
West Ham took the lead when Soucek burst in to poke home from inside the six-yard box from Jarrod Bowen’s low cross.
Casemiro headed the ball into the net after Kobbie Mainoo’s cross but was offside and as the Red Devils surged forward, West Ham squandered several chances to score a second on half-time.
The equalizer came when Bryan Mbeumo fired a dangerous low ball into the penalty area and Sesko produced a brilliant volley, much to the dismay of West Ham manager Nuno Espirito Santo and most at the London Stadium.
