Doug arrived on time this morning to catch the ferry back to Spivey Gap. Three other hikers also needed Spivey Gap, so we were able to split the transportation cost four ways. Lihat juga sa8skz. The plan I made for today is to head back to Erwin from Spivey Gap and then out the other side to Curley Maple Gap Shelter.
Being the first out meant dodging snow-filled branches ready to fall on you.
The ground this morning has a lot of snow. As I walked, the snow melted through my shoes and soaked my socks. My feet are warm thanks to the wool socks. However, they are completely waterlogged. Soaked feet tend to blister more easily and trench foot is also a concern. I keep a pair of sacred socks for the night. Sleeping in warm, dry socks helps reverse some of the moisture problems from a day of hiking.
It’s not cold enough for the streams to freeze.
It really is easy to travel miles to Erwin. It’s easy to look back, with today’s knowledge, and say, “I could have covered these miles two days ago.” But two days ago I didn’t know when the weather would get worse. Again I am reminded that things are unknowable. I can’t always guess the best plan. Heck, sometimes you don’t even know what the best plan is after the fact. It is important to accept what is and was.

Perhaps for the first time, the climb out of the city was very gradual. Thanks to a gentle climb I arrived at the refuge very early, before 3 p.m. With temperatures of 15 degrees and winds predicted, I want the shelter to serve as a windbreak. Since the next shelter is 22 miles ahead, this was my stop for the night. For added insulation, I wrapped my tent around my duvet (burrito style, not leaning). I’m warm and comfortable.
