Under-strength Spain were held to a 0-0 draw by Egypt in their friendly international match at Cornella de Llobregat on Tuesday, a result that sees the country lose top spot in the world rankings but could boost its visitor’s morale ahead of the World Cup.
Egypt came closest in the first half when Omar Marmoush’s shot from the edge of the penalty area hit the post, while there was little to be excited about for Spain, who created several half-chances but few clear-cut opportunities.
The draw sees Spain drop to second place in the world rankings, overtaken by France, with the country coming closest via a thunderous free-kick five minutes before the end from Alejandro Grimaldo, which fired off the crossbar.
Egypt finished the match with 10 men after a second yellow card for Hamdi Fathy, but will be pleased with a composed performance in a match that was initially scheduled to be played in Qatar but was moved out of the Middle East due to logistical problems.

Mexico dominated possession in the first half and took the lead in the 19th minute when Jorge Sanchez scored from a corner, slotting the ball in as he fell back.
Belgium responded immediately after the break when Dodi Lukebakio exploited a gap in the Mexican defense and unleashed a powerful strike from distance to equalize in the 46th minute.
Both teams made a large number of substitutions in the second half to give players the opportunity to stake their claim for a place in the squad.
Belgium, which defeated the United States 5-2 in its previous match, next plays Croatia on June 2, while Mexico faces Ghana in a friendly match on May 22.
