My God! We start the JMT!
Day 1:
We woke up and hung during an hour and then we start the path of Cottonwood Lakes in Horseshoe Meadows. We are walking through the John Muir Trail Nema that starts about 30 miles south of Mount Whitney Terminus because this is how we could get a permit. I recommend sleeping in Horseshoe Meadows before starting from the beginning of the Cottonwood Lakes path to help acclimatize the elevation because it is 10,000 feet.
We spent a pass called New Army Pass, to 12,298 feet and I just took a break in the climb. I listened to music walking and can really do wonders for me. I have 30 minutes of music a day along the way, so I don’t use too much phone battery. Not aloud, of course, because that is noise pollution for others. I use an ear outbreak, so I can hear what is happening around me with the other ear!
I put on sunscreen at 11:30 am, which was too late and now I have a solar burn. Well, live and learn.
New food discoveries
I tried a new Swedish fish mark (called Smart Sweets) and on a 1-10 scale, I would give them a 3 or 4. I also obtained a pack of Whole Foods olives that are really heavy, but really good! On the dinner path, we had paste with salmon and leftover olives. Yum! 😋
In general, there are no complaints of mine. I think this first day has been incredible. The same from land sliding lizard. Trucker’s complaint is stepping on SAP (probably because I steal his flip flops). Ha ha! 😜
Day 2
We will try Mt Whitney tomorrow. I am so excited! This will be the third time of Trucker Whitney! We have made 13.2 miles today, which places us in Guitar Lake, just a few miles under the MT Whitney summit. Not as cold as the transmission we sleep next night. We left the camp at 7:24 am and got to Guitar Lake at 3 pm.
He had Breakie and a sandwich with peanut butter, a blonde chocolate bar and crushed walking butter cookies for lunch. Very good! For dinner we have ramen and tuna. Trucker is having rice with something else.
There have been tons of mosquitoes, but all were for trucks and my mother. I saw five marmotas today and two yesterday. Very nice, but it assures me to bring my Whitney package so they don’t get into that. Ha ha.
LSL and I have no complaints for the day, but Trucker’s complaint is the sap that was attached to his foot yesterday is attached to his sock.
Day 3
We got up at 4 am and went on our trip through Whitney. I’m going to wait a little before saying if we get to the summit. So, we started and at first it was quite easy. Then he got a little harder. Then we reach the curves. God, those are difficult! After that we reach a snowy patch and I like different land. As if I would prefer to overcome ten farms in a quarter of a mile than not, only for the variety. The snow was packed, so I didn’t feel that I was going to fly outside the edge. Finally, we reach the misleading part. It was not steep, but one thinks they are almost there and then there are another 5 minutes. Yes, we finally reached the top!
I am the first Athenian to set foot on the MT Whitney summit! Truckalator made me a peach and cream flour at the top. He even roasted my bread on his stove. Awesome godfather! Gold star! ⭐️
Then we return to Guitar Lake, have lunch and then travel to a stream and a camp called Wallace Creek. We did 16 miles today. Tip on Wallace Creek: The camps are pleasant with a stream, but there were a lot of mosquitoes.
For dinner I ate rice and beans and mom had rice and salmon. LSL’s complaint is the 50 mosquitoes that play next to the door of their store. Is my complaint that we couldn’t eat with Trucker due to bugs and truck driver? Fair, «mosquitoes». Well, an incredible day with Whitney’s top, eating many walkers and learning that Chaseline Chaselin really works.
Day 4
Today it was really difficult to get out of my cozy sleeping bag. What accompanied me is that cats need good houses and I will help them get good houses. If you have not read my previous blogs, I am dedicating this JMT walk to help cats. I had granola for my first meal of the day we went at approximately 6:29.
We have met some really great hikers. Claire is a PCT hiker we met at the upper Whitney. We met two Jmters going to Nobo about an hour or two hours on day 4.
Today we have too much sun and now we feel hot and cold. Yuck 🥵 We took a splash on the river and felt better later. I think LSL does it too.
We went up to Forester Pass and then we start down! We have lunch for a snow lake that melts that it was perfectly turquoise and clear to the bottom. We saw a marmot drinking. First time for us to see a drinking water.
I tried some new gummies called Sweets. I love them! On a 1-10 scale they get a 9. Even Trucker likes them and it is difficult to make healthy food like. All I have been thinking today is that when we arrived in Bishop for one day of the city, I will eat pizza and a smoothie and ice cream, and I will get a ton of sugar cookies from the Bakkery. My hunger for hiker enters quickly!
We have made 16.9 miles today, which leaves us with 8.8 Miles tomorrow to the path of Onion Valley and a road to the city. We stayed at the Víte Meadow camp. Get a «meh.» My complaint of the day is that I had too much sun. My mother’s complaint is that her thighs burned the sun and Trucker has no surprisingly any. 🤯
Day 5
We walk on Kearsarge Pass after taking pasta and appointments with peanut butter for breakfast. I get music until the pass because it is our last day on the way for this section. As soon as we get to the parking lot, we have a walk. The person who took us a walk took us all to the Looney Bean Cafe in Bishop, where I got a Mango Peach and LSL shake obtained a green monkey shake and the truck driver got a dirty hippie chai.
Then we enter two different change stores to begin our replenishment. After that, we took Comfort Inn and wait in the air conditioning for 45 minutes until our room was ready. We were tired of being in the heat. After showers we went to buy food and picked up a pizza. Yum! I spent the night looking at Trucker’s photos and seeing stupid Instagram reels on my mother’s shoulder.
I have had a great day without complaints. Mom: None. Trucker’s complaint is that his driver left him two blocks from LSL and I in Bishop. As if I had never walked before! Ha!
