Borja Herrera Gonzalez announced on Friday that he will leave FC Goa after two and a half seasons with the club.
The Spanish midfielder, who is also the club’s captain, said the situation has become «untenable» for him and his family, and those in charge have put pressure on him to make this decision, in a clear reference to the difficult situation Indian football is in and the uncertainty surrounding the Indian Super League (ISL).

“Before I leave, I would like to thank everyone at this club, my great teammates who are more than that – they are my friends – and all the fans who have always shown me their support and respect,” Borja said in an Instagram post.
“I leave with a heavy heart because I have thoroughly enjoyed the last two years, both in good and in bad times, like the last few months, where I have really seen what it means to have a team that is like a family and that, despite the problems, tries to come to training every day with a smile.
«My family and I have been very happy and we take with us many unforgettable memories of Goa. All I can say is thank you again, and I will always carry you in my heart,» Borja added.
Appealing to save Indian football, the Spanish midfielder also said, “Please stop the nonsense and take a decision to save Indian football, this is a shame.”
Borja, who has made 51 appearances for the Gaurs, has 14 goals and 10 assists for the club.
