Super Cup: Chennaiyin FC goalkeeper pulls a Begovic, scores from own penalty area against Dempo SC

Chennaiyin FC Samik Mitra copied Asmir Begovic to score straight from his own penalty area against Dempo SC to salvage a draw for the Indian Super League in the AIFF Super Cup 2025-26 at the GMC Athletic Stadium in Bambolim on Friday.

Samik became the first goalkeeper in the club’s history to score from open play in a competitive match. He found the net after half an hour with a stunning goal from his own penalty area.

Despite controlling the opening moments of the match, Clifford Miranda’s Chennaiyin fell behind in the 25th minute when Dempo converted from a free-kick. But just minutes later, Samik produced an unforgettable moment when his long kick from his own penalty area caught the opponent off guard, sailed over Dempo’s backline and out of the goalkeeper’s reach to draw Chennaiyin level.

As the match came to an end, Chennaiyin turned up the pressure in search of a winner. Gurkirat Singh’s late strike was deflected behind for a corner before Klusner Pereira’s curling throw in stoppage time found Irfan Yadwad, whose ball rolled agonizingly wide of the goal.

Despite the narrow miss, the all-Indian side earned a well-deserved point to end the Super Cup campaign on a positive note.
