English sixth-tier club Macclesfield claimed someone tried to set fire to its stadium on Tuesday, two months after the club pulled off the biggest upset in FA Cup history by eliminating defending champions Crystal Palace.
The “suspected attempted arson” at the Leasing.com Stadium took place overnight and there were no casualties, the club said.
“Emergency services responded immediately and are on scene tackling the fire in the affected areas,” Macclesfield said in a statement.
It still called on “everyone in the area to keep their windows closed and not to approach the stadium.”
Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire and the club says it will have no further comment at this time. The stadium dates back to 1891. It has a capacity of 6,355 spectators.
Led by England’s younger brother and Manchester United icon Wayne Rooney, the small club from the northwest of England stunned Premier League’s Palace 2-1 at Macclesfield on January 11 and created one of the most iconic moments in football’s oldest knockout competition.
With 117 places between National League North team Macclesfield and Palace when they played each other, this was the biggest upset in the 155-year history of the FA Cup. Macclesfield were eliminated from the Premier League by Brentford in the next round (the fourth).
