Sweden sacks manager Tomasson after dismal start to World Cup qualifying

Sweden has sacked manager Jon Dahl Tomasson, the country’s football federation said on Tuesday, after a dismal start to the World Cup qualifying campaign left the country bottom of Group B with one point from four games.

Dane Tomasson’s last match in charge was a 1–0 home defeat to Kosovo, his side’s third straight defeat, leaving the country on the brink of elimination.

“The decision of the association’s board is based on the fact that the men’s national team has not delivered the results we had hoped for,” Simon Astrom, president of the Swedish Football Association, said in a statement.

«There is still a chance of a play-off in March and it is our responsibility to ensure that we have the best possible conditions to reach a World Cup play-off. In doing so, we assess that new leadership is needed in the form of a new coach.»
