T less – The journey

It’s getting real, and I mean REALLY real! We are currently headed from Delaware to Amicalola Falls State Park and Lodge via a visit to see our grandchildren in Pensacola, Florida. There are five days until my descent of the AT. Finally!

T minus years

I made the decision to attempt a hike on the AT many, many years ago. My body was still young and strong. I loved hiking and backpacking. And most of all, he loved being outdoors. So, yeah, maybe someday.

T minus months

When I started thinking about finally retiring, I also started thinking about the trail again. I bought and tested equipment. I did some pretty unfortunate but nonetheless fun test hikes. I began collecting dehydrated food and supplies. The spare room in our house suddenly became reminiscent of a supermarket aisle or an exploited supplier, or many of them. I modified more equipment and food options. I started exercising a little more.

T minus weeks

I retired from more than one full-time job on the first of the year. Lihat juga mnh4. With 8 weeks to go, I started carrying my backpack filled with 30 pounds of birdseed around my neighborhood, trekking poles and all. The neighbors had fun.

I also packed 30 resupply boxes for 5 days, which was no small feat!

T minus days

And now, as I sit on a hotel balcony watching the beautiful blue-green waves of the ocean crash below, I am already smelling pine, listening to campfire conversations, and dreaming of being held by Mother Earth and Grandmother Universe for the next 6 or 7 months. Slow and steady.

Praying for health, safety, and resilience for myself and everyone else I will have the incredible privilege of sharing the trail with.

Good luck to everyone!

– good luck
