The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has changed its stand and enforced a partial stadium closure against Mohun Bagan Super Giant following a recall from the Indian Super League (ISL) club on Tuesday.
The club was initially fined and ordered complete closure of the stadium for the upcoming ISL match against Odisha FC on March 6 due to alleged spectator misconduct during the previous match against Chennaiyin FC.
It was later revealed that the AIFF said the sanction was imposed on MBSG for repeated violation by its spectators during a one-year trial period.
“The AIFF Disciplinary Committee, an independent judicial body comprising retired judges of the Supreme Court and Supreme Court, formed in accordance with the AIFF Constitution, had on June 3, 2025 sanctioned Mohun Bagan Super Giant (MBSG) with a ‘stadium closure’ during the 2024-2025 season for multiple violations of spectator misconduct during the season, and in particular during Match No. 163 of the Indian Super League 2024-25, held on April 12, 2025,” the statement said.
The ISL match referred to in the statement was against Bengaluru FC. “The complaint stated that ‘fireworks’ were fired in the away section from the home stands, where traveling supporters of Bengaluru FC were seated, with one such projectile striking the club owner of Bengaluru FC.”
The committee subsequently imposed a stadium closure but suspended the sanction for one year under Article 35 of the AIFF disciplinary code. The club was placed on probation, with a clear warning that further misconduct would result in an automatic ban.
However, during the match between Mohun Bagan and Kerala Blasters FC on February 14, held at the Vivekananda Yuva Bharati Krirangan, it was noted that there were “several instances of pyrotechnics” used by home spectators.
The incident was deemed an offense under “Article 67 of the Code, in addition to ISL League Rules 7.3.8 and 7.5.4”, following which the club was ordered to close the stadium completely, with the option to appeal the decision.
On Tuesday, following a review request filed by MBSG, the decision was changed from a complete closure to a partial closure.
As a result, the club will host Odisha FC on March 6, with access restricted to certain areas of the Salt Lake Stadium.
