The Italian FA series series a request for AC Milan to play Como in Australia

AC Milan’s Serie A conflict with Como could be the first major European domestic league match that was played outside the home country after the Italian Football Federation (Figc) gave the green light for the match in Perth, Australia on Thursday.

The location switch comes from the Olympic logistics instead of commercial ambition, because the iconic San Siro stadium of Milan will not be available that weekend when it organizes the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics in Milano-Cortina on 6 February.

The proposal moves European football to unknown territory after earlier requests to organize domestic competitions abroad were saved by the authorities.

«The Federal Council gave a positive opinion to the Lega Serie A request to play Milan-Como in Perth,» the Figc said in a statement.

«This brings closer what a historic ‘trip’ would be abroad for a Serie A competition.»

However, the Figc warned that the «complex authorization procedure» still requires formal approval of Football Australia, UEFA, the Asian football confederation and FIFA before the historical fixture can kick off.
