The leading goal scorer of Napoli, Dries Mertens, announces retirement of football


Former Belgium -attacker and the most important goal scorer of Napoli, Dries Mertens, has announced his retirement of football, with his contract in Galatasaray that ends at the end of this month.

The 38-year-old announced his decision in a video on social media, but would play in an exhibition match organized by his former Napoli teammate Marek Hamsik in July.

Career -time line

Mertens started his professional career with Ghent in 2007 Before Going On To Play for Clubs Like Eendracht Aalst, AGOVV, Utrecht and PSV Eindhoven.

He moved to the Serie A after drawing at Napoli in 2013 and then became the leading goal scorer with 148 goals in 397 performances.

He won two Italian cups with the club before he left for Galatasaray in 2022, where he won three consecutive Turkish Super Ligtitels.

In Belgian colors

Mertens, who has 109 international performances, played for the last time in Belgian colors on the World Cup 2022 in Qatar, where Belgium did not qualify from group phases. He scored 21 goals for his country.
