The long Vermont trails – The Trek

He TraceThe oldest long -distance hiking route in the United States was conceived and built by members of the Green Mountain Club between 1910 and 1930. It runs from north to south through the length of the state and corresponds to the AT for the 100 most southern miles before the AT takes a turn to the east towards the formid white mountains of New Hampshire. There is a clearly different environment between the portion where these two long paths travel together and where the AT takes its own path. The shared path is full of bright hikers, a beautifully maintained Gifford State Parkand charming uploading mountains like Bromley and Stratton. The AT section is only softer and invites you to rule calm.

This pristine refuge is available for hikers in the Gifford Woods State Park.

My brief stay in Vermont was a walk to the south of 78 miles, completing a section that I saved in July so that my son, plus one, could join me for New Hampshire. I chose south for logistics reasons and hoping to see more people than I would do in the other direction. Anyone who thinks is only should see the constant flow of hikers in this section! Most of them were excited by the next challenges and had questions for me about the field and logistics. It was fun to know the answers to your questions.

My bears sighting count is now up to two. He was walking through a field when a bear crossed the path on his way from a stream to the forest. Without any breath on my part, he took off as soon as he saw me. Due to the open land, I could probably have received a photo, I was so busy watching the speed of this bear that I did not concentrate on getting my camera. Shortly after, I was walking through one of several fields that had not been cut and thought how difficult it would be to see a bear. In a state where the path remains well, it made no sense to me that the growth of the field was on my head. Then I saw the sign below, explaining that this portion of Vermont is a stop for the Mariposas Monarch Travel. Many things make sense when you have a little context.

The growth of alike and other flowers extends over my head.

I had felt quite healthy despite the persistent pain in the left shoulder, when I began to obtain the strangest pain in the left hip. It is not muscle or bone; It feels like an abrasion on the surface of my skin, but there are no wounds. I can usually massage the sensation; It is really strange not to have a clear source of pain. Blue Bear is recovering from an episode of tiles, so I’m perhaps having sympathy pain.

It depends on your mentality

Walking south, I had the opportunity to talk with many hikers to the north. There is a fairly standard exchange that occurs with each person who knows (name of trails, where he began, etc., including any advice on the next path. Almost all people apologized for the «boring» experience in this part of the state, except for a very wise hiker. He mentioned the report he had received from many before him, and he replied: «It depends on his mentality.» I appreciated the reminder to see the way for its unique beauty, instead of compared to other places.

Walking for this field in Vermont, I had a strong impulse for an ice cream from Ben and Jerry!

This lovely pond is easily accessible as a one -day walk, so it is a popular destination for the locals.

The sun rose …

While I go to the south, I face the reality of oppressive temperatures and my time in Vermont was a good preparation for that. While my days at the beginning of my walk in Virginia were wet and fresh, Vermont was decidedly unexpected since the high temperatures have dried much of the water that generally affects hikers here.

This waterfall had only a small portion of the water that typically sends cascade by the mountain.

Curiosities of the path

While walking through a beautiful and flat vermont section, I noticed this rock next to a river bed that was particularly low due to lack of recent rain. I wondered if this rock pays tribute to Benton Mackaye, whose 1921 article, «a path of the Apalaches: a project in regional planning,» the AT organization inspired. Or does this refer to any other Mac? A casual search for Google did not give me an answer. Let me a comment if you know it with certainty!

Remember to look for beauty

Blaze Blue trails represent side trips that a hiker can remove the main path in the AT. While passing through 78 miles of Vermont trails last week, intentionally sought the blue flames that would create some special memories from this section. This place of lunch at the top of Killington Peak was a great opportunity to reduce speed and absorb a bit of sun while feding the rest of the day. There is beauty in well chosen rest and recovery.

State Limerick – Vermont

  • Wild flowers bloom at the top of Bromley’s Peak
  • Stratton, Killington, not for meek
  • Plants and rivers sat down dry
  • The miles slid directly by
  • Long trail hikers, their own way to search
