There are no new equipment, $ 11 flights and hiker mathematics: sticking to my $ 750 budget

When establishing a backpacking trip, it is good to know the weight of its base so that it can maximize the space for sweets and luxury items. «Does that 1 pound sandwich of the city paste? Of course, my base weight can handle that!» Unfortunately, I am sad to say that my base weight is not what it was once. Let’s get into that.

Gear

I have not bought any new equipment for this trip. I have acquired my equipment for many years and replace it as necessary when it fails beyond a shadow of doubt. According to the nature of my frugal challenge, I stayed away from Rei (except to spend my dividend, but more about that later) and I will fix what I have. Unfortunately, this means bringing my bear. The BV500, my trustee, kick in the Grizzly country and areas that have hard boat requirements are leaving the garage. There is a forest service mandate on how to store food in national forests that CT is going through, and it seems that sleeping with its food is not a legal option. He is allowed to hang his food, which is what I usually do for the eyelashes on the path of the Apalaches, but after combing through ancient forums and blogs it seems that the situation of the tree is less than ideal for the bear. My reading led to many anecdotal stories about the use of an Ursack, but unfortunately, I am not buying new equipment, so my 2.6 lb bear may have to be enough. Maybe it scrapes some stickers to save an ounce.

With the bear you can my base weight for this walk is 15.2 lb! It used to be 11-12 lb, but I suppose that is what it means to age. I even destroyed some things. For example, I don’t have a sleeping shirt. My plan is to buy a melanaza hoodie in Leadville, since I was lucky to hook an appointment at the time I am walking through the area, but there is no guarantee that they honor it, since they will arrive a few days late. Until then, I will be sticky/sweating in my synthetic swollen jacket or rain. One of Fanny Pack’s life is that I will probably put a pound of things there, leaving my backpack so much lighter.

I have written my team list for all of you (you are welcome), but instead of writing a love letter to each piece I will tell you about my favorite and less favorite pieces.

Favorite Team: Sleeping pad isolated with sea ether to summit –

The always dodges great night of sleep in the field is chased by backpackers everywhere. I used to use a popular yellow sleeping pad that sounded like a bag of french fries (and will remain without a name) and I never had a good rest night. No matter what I did, whether excessive, influential or that does it well, the hips that sleep hurt enough to wake up in the middle of the night. The ether light is not as light as the name implies, registering 18.9 oz on the scale of my kitchen, but I sleep so well that I do not even feel the need to disburse for a hotel bed when available. I will happily take the extra weight for a better break.

Gear less favorite: Comb

My folding comb, free from an incredible Japanese hotel on my last trip abroad, it is possibly my less favorite thing I have. As someone with curly and frightening hair, a whole week without brushing leads to problems, so it is a necessary evil. I like to be completely wild in the desert, so this team really crazy my style. Fortunately, it weighs less than 1 oz, which makes it less likely to end in the garbage on my first day in the city.

Expenses prior to the train

Now, the moment when everyone has been waiting! How much money is this girl left to use on her walk? We collect the expenses prior to the train.

Gear: $ 0
Requirement: $ 40.64
Flights: $ 11.20
Garmin Inreach Subscription: $ 15
Search and rescue insurance: $ 39.95
Duffel bag: $ 0.35

Total spent: 107.13
Remaining funds:
$ 642.87

How did I spend so little? As mentioned earlier, I already have my whole team and I am giving myself due to my trails and a strong bear can.

The replenishment can be expensive. Gavé money here attacking my own pantry, using my Dividend of Rei last year to buy $ 27.85 in free snacks for me (excrement mathematics), finding two dehydrated backpack meals that a friend did not want while helping them to move and buy in the Bins in bulk in Winco. This first refueling is for 6 full days of meals, so I am quite satisfied with myself, especially because I will reach 1900-2300 calories and more than 40 g of proteins per day! And this replenishment does not even include any tuna.

For flights, I used points and I just had to pay $ 5.60 for the flight! I used Southwest to get to Denver (free checking bag for my trekking posts) and I will leave Durango in United. I obtained these points by opening credit cards last year and hitting the minimum expense in things I was already buying.

Garmin really took the lead here to drain my funds. I share the Inreach with my boyfriend, so we divide the monthly subscription and the $ 15 are my half. SAR insurance, on the other hand, is per person and I had to buy that with a complete cause, I am not trying to guess help in a situation that threatens life due to a crazy rate. I looked for if Sar is free in Colorado and found everything to say yes, but American medical attention is wild and I prefer not to be blind due to a «helicopter out of the network.»

I had to buy something to check my trekking posts and found a canvas bag of $ 8.99 on Amazon. I used to use the IKEA blue bag with a zipper, but they seem to have been discontinued. With my Amazon Prime credit card points, I was able to eliminate a lot of money and the canvas cost me $ 0.35. I will carry this 6 oz folding canvas to Brekenridge and then send it to Lake Molas with the food that I am sending there.

I feel good with my base weight and the funds available and I can’t wait to start this path!
