Thiago Silva and Fluminense end contract, defenders move to Europe

Veteran defender Thiago Silva ended his stay at Fluminense on Wednesday and reportedly wants a move back to Europe to revive his hopes of playing for Brazil in the World Cup.

Fluminense announced the termination of the 41-year-old defender’s contract six months earlier. He joined the Rio de Janeiro club in May last year.

Fluminense said in a statement that the former AC Milan, Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea defender leaves behind “a legacy of dedication and love for Fluminense.” He also played there between 2006 and 2008.

Earlier Tuesday, former Chelsea defender John Terry said on TikTok that he would like to see the defender return to Stamford Bridge, where the Brazilian won the 2021 Champions League title. Terry said: «His two children are at our academy. He will no doubt be back here in London with his family at Christmas.»

Thiago Silva helped Fluminense reach the semi-finals of the Club World Cup in July and was a starter for most of the season, which ends in December for Brazilian clubs.

The defender was part of Brazil’s selection for the last four World Cups. With the national team he also won the 2013 Confederations Cup and the 2019 Copa América.
