Topo trail running shoes review

TOS Someone who has used more than a dozen pairs of athletic athletic shoes in long steps, fast paths and everything else, it is sure to say that I am deeply familiar with the philosophy of the brand: natural shape of the foot, low fall and an adjustment that does not fight you.

I found moles for the first time during my Trail of the 2018 Apalaches through a walk and I have stayed with them since then. So, when I saw that Topo had launched the draw last year, he was immediately curious. It is positioned as a hybrid hybrid shoe for all hybrids built for the running and hiking bridge, with a cross attraction for those who spend so much time transporting a package as a package as registering to pour in a lunch.

After spending more than 500 miles through the varied terrain, from slippery granite in Acadia to the Arctic Tundra in Alaska, I have developed a good sense of what this shoe does well, where it stands out and where it falls a bit short.

Review circumstances

Descending the screen on the Brooks range of Alaska.

I tried the Topo to draw mainly in Maine, alternating between my paths in the National Park of Acadia and the most remote land near Millinocket and Baxter State Park. I used them in everything, from morning casual races to Summit’s thrust with a 20 -pound package, and even a few days to guide walks and trail races for customers. The conditions went from dry and dusty to complete mud and Aguanieve: typical things of the shoulder season in the northeast.

I also used them for two 7 -day guided hiking trips at the doors of the Arctic National Park in Alaska, where we sail through Tundra without anticipation, crosses of rivers, glacial morrena and rocky ridges in real desert conditions.

Topo traverse characteristics

Adjustment and comfort

Like most moles, the traverse offers a gold adjustment: width in the feet box, adjusted in the heel and sufficient volume through half of the foot to feel safe without pressure. If you have used persecution or ultraventure, this will feel familiar. But where persecution 2 leans luxurious and protective, the traverse feels more marked and receptive by being firmer under the feet and more stable, especially with a load.

I experienced zero access points, rubbing or sliding of the heel, even in steep descents. The recorded tongue is robust enough to block waste without feeling too constructed, and the lace system keeps tension very well.

Feeling under the feet

Zipfoam’s entresuela is not soft, and that is a good thing. It is firm but not hard, receptive without being nervous. It reminds me a little of Altra Tump 5 when you feel connected to the path but not punished by him. There is more feeling of land than in ultraventure or even in persecution, but the 30 mm heels stack still takes the advantage of hard landings.

The prepaid rock plate adds protection without compromising flexibility. You will notice it on rocky and unequal paths, where it helps to soften the sharp edges while it still allows you to stay agile.

Traction and grip

The sole is what sold me. The Megagragrip Vibram rubber is sticky in all the right shapes. On wet roots, slabs grain, mud, loose gravel, alaska nuances, cling. 4 mm orejetas are not super deep, but they are well spaced and aggressive enough for anything that is not in deep snow or gloppy clay.

A particularly revealing moment was to descend the Cadillac Mountain of Acade in the rain. Where others in smaller shoes slid, the traverse remained firm. It is rare to obtain this type of traction in a shoe that still feels executable.

Breathability and drainage

I was surprised how well the top ventilated, even in warm and humid days. It is not the mesh light as a race floor, but the reinforced synthetic material dries quickly and breathes better than expected for a shoe in this category. He also drove crosses of shallow streams and wet grass like a champion.

Durability

After more than 500 miles, the traverse stays well. I have noticed expected cosmetic wear on the outer sole, but the upper part, the entresuela and even the bumper of the foot are solid. There are no sewing or alamation bursts in the pair I tried. Time will say it, but this feels like a shoe of more than 1000 miles, especially if the tour for heavier use.

Topo traverse pros

The traverse drove Alaska Tundra well.

Excellent balance of protection, comfort and feeling of land.
The traverse reaches a rare sweet point where you feel connected to the ground without sacrificing comfort or protection under the feet, even on sharp and rocky trails.

First level traction in wet and technical terrain.
Vibram’s megagragrip sole offers an inspiring grip of confidence in everything, from slippery roots to slab granite, especially working in an adverse climate.

Friendly feet adjustment with a closed heel.
The wide finger box allows the natural extension of the feet, while the adjusted heel and the midfield design keep their foot on unequal terrain or out of the chamber.

Rock Plate adds a real value without the rigid shoe.
The prepaid rock plate is remarkable in the best way: protects against sharp rocks and roots without compromising flexibility or sensation of trails.

Breathable and dry.
Abrasion resistant mesh handles water crosses and heavy dew with ease, drying quickly and maintaining comfort for long days.

Versatile: You can handle hiking, path of trails and guide.
This is the weird shoe that feels so appropriate in an informal trot of 5 miles as a guide to customers on a 12 -hour walk in the field in the field.

TOPO BRINGING CONTRAS

The strongest feeling of the feet will not appeal to those who like luxury damping
If you are used to Malvavisco’s comfort of something like Hoka Speedgoat, traverse can feel a bit hard, especially on longer days or races.

The durability of the upper and lateral mesh can be inconsistent.
After some days resistant in Alaska, I noticed that it was frayed along the side mesh, especially where the shoe flexes. A client had a complete side panel break after only six days in the Brooks range, suggesting that durability can vary according to the use or possible quality control problems. As mentioned earlier, it was much better.

Limited color options (purely aesthetic).
If the style cares, keep in mind: the current color options of traverse skew more utilitaries than striking, with tones off and a meaningless appearance. There are only green and gray colors available.

Final thoughts

The Topo traverse reaches a sweet point that I have been chasing for a while. It is one of the few shoes with which I feel equally comfortable running and guiding. Most trail shoes lean too much towards minimum and feel unstable with a package, or the hiking shoe are completed and feel clumsy when you want to move quickly. The traverse does not try to be either. It is a real hybrid, and that is where its strength is located.

Would you use it for a 100 -mile ultramarathon? No. But during the long days in the mountains, fast and light missions, or even a fastpack during the night, this is probably the most versatile shoe that Topo has made to date.

Both pursuit 2 and ultraventure pro are replaced in my rotation for anything below 25 miles, and I have already recommended it to customers looking for a shoe that can do a little of everything.
