Newcastle United’s win at Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday eased pressure from manager Eddie Howe but left opposite number Thomas Frank’s future looking increasingly uncertain.
Newcastle won 2–1 for just their third away win of the Premier League season, moving up to 10th in the table and ending a run of three consecutive defeats.
Malick Thiaw opened the scoring for the Magpies in first-half stoppage time, but Archie Gray equalized after the hour. However, Jacob Ramsey restored the lead within five minutes.
Newcastle manager Howe had said after his side’s home loss to Brentford that he would step aside if he did not believe he was the right man for the club. Lihat juga hgtgdfgdtr13. But Tuesday’s victory means talks about a possible departure will be muted.
But the future looks bleak for Frank unless he can turn things around quickly.
Tottenham supporters left no doubt about their feelings at the end of the encounter, with cheers ringing through the stadium as their side suffered an 11th league defeat since the Brentford manager arrived, dropping to 16th in the table and moving closer to the relegation zone.
«It has of course been better. It hurts enormously that we couldn’t win today,» said Frank.
«I understand the frustration and the easiest thing to do is to point the finger at me. Unfortunately, that’s part of the job. I will work day and night to turn this around, but it’s not just one person. There is no doubt that we need to improve, and I need to be part of that,» he added.
But he said he had spoken to the club’s owners on the eve of the match and was confident his job was safe despite Spurs’ winless run in the league stretching to eight games.
Frank now has the lowest win rate of any Spurs manager in the Premier League era, with a win rate of just 26.9 percent, and things won’t get any easier when his side play a derby against north London rivals and league leaders Arsenal on Sunday, February 22.
«We have to do better and the next game will be another tough one. We have time to get that right, but we have great players in the team,» said Spurs forward Dominic Solanke.
«We don’t want to be at the bottom of the table, but we know we can turn it around. It’s a matter of when. We now have a while until the next match,» he added.
