Tottenham Hotspur -midfielder James Maddison will miss most of the new season after injuring his front cruciate ligament (ACL), according to reports on Thursday.
He suffered the injury during a pre-season match against Newcastle United, the farewell match of teammate son Heung-Min.
«His operation will take place in the coming days and then James will start his rehabilitation with our medical team,» Tottenham said in a statement. «Everyone at Tottenham Hotspur wishes James a complete and fast recovery.»
Leave in the 1-1 draw, Maddison went down during an off-the-ball incident where he seemed to adjust his knee. He then had to be stretched off the field.
Manager Thomas Frank said it was the same knee that the 28-year-old had previously wounded, the BBC reported. «The injury of James Maddison looks bad. It was a brutal moment,» said Spurs Boss after the game.
A knee injury in May forced Maddison to sit outside the last part of last season.
Spurs did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
