Tottenham’s Thomas Frank ends up in ‘perfect storm’

Under-fire Tottenham Hotspur coach Thomas Frank admitted he is in the ‘perfect storm’ after being taunted by his own fans following a 2-1 home defeat to West Ham United in the Premier League on Saturday.

The Dane, who left Brentford to join Tottenham last summer, left the pitch to chants of ‘fired tomorrow morning’ from fans suffering another home defeat.

Tottenham have won twice in 11 home Premier League games this season, six of which they have lost, and with his team in 14th place he is now fighting to keep his job.

«It seems like we are in the perfect storm at the moment. A last-minute defeat, and when everyone feels like they have given everything, including the fans, you get a blow. It is incredibly difficult to process for them, the players and me,» he told reporters. “I promise it’s extremely hard for me too.”

Tottenham fell behind after a goal from Crysencio Summerville in the 15th minute, but after Cristian Romero headed the equalizer, it looked like they would take three points.

But Callum Wilson struck a late winner for 18th-placed West Ham to boost their chances of survival.

Once again, Tottenham left the field to the fans’ boos and will have to bounce back quickly when they play Borussia Dortmund at home in a crucial Champions League match on Tuesday.

«I’ve probably had better times; obviously it’s not the best of times. But I understand, I’m the man in charge. So the blame will go to me. That’s fair, in that sense there’s no problem,» Frank said.

“As long as they support the players and do everything they can to support them and move them forward, that is what we do and we will continue.”

It was Tottenham’s third successive defeat in all competitions, and they have now won twice in their last thirteen league games.

Frank’s job was made more difficult on Saturday when his starting line-up was reportedly leaked on social media on Friday.

«It’s not optimal. I don’t think this is the first time in world history or football history; it happened at other clubs too,» he said. «Of course I’d rather it not happen.»

Although it was doom and gloom for Tottenham, West Ham’s first win in eleven Premier League games boosted their hopes of avoiding relegation.

«It’s special to win at the last moment of the match,» said manager Nuno Espirito Santo, once fired by Tottenham. «I’m very proud of the way the players handled the situation.»
