Tribute paid to Diogo Jota for the FIFA World Cup qualification match of Portugal against Armenia

Players of Portugal and Armenia saw a minute of silence before their FIFA World Cup 2026 qualification match in honor of the former Portuguese attacker Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva.

Jota and Silva died in July in a tragic car accident in Spain. This is the first international competition in Portugal since the death of Jota. The former Liverpool -attacker was also part of the Portugal team that won the UEFA Nations League in 2019 and 2025.

Prior to the match, head coach Roberto Martinez of Portugal announced a ’23 plus one ‘member of a member for this set of FIFA World Cup qualifications against Armenia and Hungary.

Martinez said that an extra place was left empty in the team for striker Diogo Jota, who died in July in a traffic accident.

«This is the first training camp without Diogo Jota. We know what he meant for each of us. We want to honor his memory every day,» said Martinez.

«We will wear his spirit in our hearts. We will win for Diogo, for his brother André, as we always do for all Portuguese people. We will call 23+1.»
