Tiny Bodø/Glimt caused another shock in the UEFA Champions League by beating last year’s runners-up Inter Milan 3-1 in the play-offs on Wednesday.
The Norwegian underdog followed up back-to-back wins against Manchester City and Atletico Madrid by securing a two-goal lead going into next week’s second leg in Milan.
Bodø/Glimt is fast becoming the unlikely story of this season’s Champions League, causing one setback after another.
Sondre Fet put the home side ahead after collecting Kasper Hogh’s back heel in the 20th minute. Francesco Pio Esposito equalized for Inter before half-time, but Bodø/Glimt took control in the second half.
Hogh produced a second assist to set up Jens Petter Hauge in the 61st and scored a goal himself three minutes later.
Inter have been beaten finalists in two of the past three seasons but now face a big test to progress to the next round.
In another match, Anthony Gordon scored four first-half goals as Newcastle defeated Qarabag 6–1.
Newcastle led 5-0 at half-time against Qarabag in Azerbaijan and, barring an unlikely collapse in the second leg at home, will go into the round of 16.
Gordon completed his hat-trick in 33 minutes at Tofik Bakhramov Stadium in Baku, finishing fourth in first-half extra time.
Malick Thiaw was also on target for the Premier League team, who had 16 shots in a rampant first half.
Elvin Jafarguliyev pulled one back for Qarabag, one of the surprise stories of this season’s Champions League after qualifying for the play-offs. But Jacob Murphy’s deflected strike completed the defeat for Newcastle, who will be the fifth English team in the last 16 if they go ahead.
Atletico drew 3-3 against Club Brugge and Bayer Leverkusen is 2-0 ahead of Olympiacos after the first leg.
Atletico squandered a two-goal lead at Bruges and saw the Belgians come back again in the 89th minute with an equalizer to keep the teams neck and neck at 3-3.
Julian Alvarez’s penalty in the eighth minute was followed by another January goal, with Ademola Lookman set up in first-half extra time. Raphael Onyedika pulled a goal back six minutes into the second half after Nicolo Tresoldi’s effort was saved. Tresoldi then equalized on the hour mark.
Atletico regained the lead in the 70th through a Joel Ordonez own goal, but Christian Tzolis added a final twist in the 89th.
Two goals from Patrik Schick put Leverkusen in full control against Olympiacos, with the Germans winning 2-0 ahead of the home leg
