UEFA Ladies Euro 2025: title defender England fights back to beat Italy in extra time and to reach Final

Chloe Kelly shot the rebound of her own penalty to get a winner of 119 minutes, while reigning champion England attracted a stunning comeback to beat Italy 2-1 after reaching extra time on Tuesday and the final of the women’s championship.

England fell in the back of the first half, but hit the level back to the level by Michelle Agyemang for six minutes in the second half of the stop time, and when Emma Severini Beth Mead pulled down in the box in extra time, Kelly grabbed the opportunity to decide the game.

Her first attempt was saved, but she was quickly stamped to focus in the rebound and send England to the final, where it will be confronted with Spain or Germany.

After a coming-shootout victory in Sweden in the quarterfinals, England flirted again with a disaster, but the late wave on the floor was Italy, whose hope for reaching a first final since 1997 was crushed.

The victory pushed England to a third consecutive grand finale after the success of Euro 2022 and the World Cup loss for Spain the following year.

With the Italians who drive a wave of confidence after a last-minute winner against Norway in their quarterfinals, they defended brilliantly and attacked the break sharply.

Their perseverance brought off his fruit in the 33rd minute of a grouse semi -final when a ball found his way from the right to Barbara Bonansea, who took a touch before he took it in the roof of the net.

England then dominated the possession and created a whole series of opportunities when the Italians drove their happiness, but all too often the English attackers unleash remotely that were easily treated or flew over the bar.

With the hope of England to slowly defend his title, the 19-year-old replacement Agyemang broke a loose ball into the box and shot home to send the game to extra time.

Agaremang almost again scored again with an attempt at the second half of the extra period, jumping out and exhausted the Italian defense, only to see her agile lob bouncing back from the bar.

When he felt that it could prevent a repetition of their quarter -final penalty shoot against Sweden, England flowed forward and harvested his reward when Mead was polluted in the box, but there was still a twist in the story.

Kelly took her usual talk, but keeper Laura Giuliani held her courage and saved, only for the wing player of England to scoring from follow-up and her side in Sunday’s final in Basel.

«I just did my best for the team. It didn’t have to go that penalty, but (I was) ready for the rebound and ready for every occasion that I got with an English badge,» said a delighted Kelly.

England defender Lucy Bronze said they were forced to dig deep to reach the final.

«Yes, we don’t know if it is the easy way when it seems like this tournament, but we think we’ll win,» she said.

«I think it was the 96th minute and then the 118th minute … We just found a way to get the goals and get the ball at the last minute.»

For Italy, who had excellently defended the equalizer of England, the loss was a devastating blow.

«It is clear that going out of it hurts a lot. It has noticed the champions should give us a lot of confidence for the future. There are no words to describe the emotions we have experienced on this trip,» said coach Andrea Soncin.

«Tonight, for as difficult as the girls fought, we definitely deserved a different end. Many difficult situations to respond to. It’s sad, but I am and we are very proud.»
